HSE and Social Due Diligence Review for Metal Mining Company in Africa

JOE was entrusted by a Japanese company to review the Environment, social and Governance due diligence (ESG DD) of a metal mining development company in Africa for their capital participation.
The DD encompassed a comprehensive review of HSE and social policy, management system and performance of the activities of the mining company and compliance with relevant local legislation and applicable international standards such as the environmental and social performance standards of the World Bank Group (IFC) as well as consistent ESG approach to the intended investor.
The services provided preliminarily started with a series of literature survey of the domestic laws and regulations to be applied, HSE related documents such as environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) reports of the company’s past projects and others. And then, the review was followed by site survey to further understand the extent of the HSE and social performance through visiting of several mining locations and smelter plants as well as surrounding environmentally and socially sensitive areas along with interviews with the representatives in charge and other related person.
